CARB 34

Hassan S. El Khadem, helk@comcast.net, Emeritus Isbell Professor, Department of Chemistry, The American University, 4400 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington DC, WA 20016-8014
During half a century, Derek Horton contributed significantly to the field of carbohydrates through his extensive research, and to the Carbohydrate Division and carbohydrate community through his editorial and nomenclature work. He served for many years as founder editor of the journal Carbohydrate Research, and succeeded Wolfrom as editor of Advances in Carbohydrate Chemistry and Biochemistry. My review starts when he began publishing his own research at OSU. Soon his scientific reputation, and his gentle and friendly character made him one of the most popular research advisors. At the time he left this institution he had nearly four hundred papers to his credit. Then, as research professor at American University, he reached about five hundred. This presentation will outline some of Derek Horton's most important research by projecting schemes from his papers and discussing their importance.
