Application of the hetero-Pauson-Khand (HPK) reaction to the synthesis of several classes of complex molecules will be described with emphasis on novel, versatile routes to HPK substrates and stereoselectivity issues encountered in HPK bicyclization reactions.  Efficient routes to HPK substrates such as 2 and 3 will be discussed as well as conversion of the substrates to complex polycyclic targets (such as 1).
