In an effort to improve the efficiency of dye substituted solar cells, N-aryl arenedicarboximides are currently investigated as low cost compounds with panchromatic properties at fluorescence high quantum yield. 1,8-naphthalic imides which have been modified at the 4-position of the napthalene ring for improved electron transfer between donor imide-arene and TiO2 surface. Scheme 1 shows the new synthetic that take advantage of the electronic properties with appropriate subsituent groups to give high fluorescence QY; (a key indicator of predominant singlet state) in the quest for high photovoltaic efficiency.
