Aminoazobenzene disperse dyes containing b-sulfatoethylsulfonyl group is known for having temporary solubility. They can be applied to eco-friendly dyeing of polyester fiber. In this study, a series of aminoazobenzene dyes were synthesized and characterized. Diazo components having nitro or bromo group were prepared and coupled with coupling components to give 4-diethylamino-4'-(2-sulfatoethylsulfonyl)azobenzene dyes. The absorption maxima of the dyes were dependent upon the substituents in the diazo and coupling components and varied from 464 to 564 nm in DMF. The dyes were found to have good substantivity to polyester during dyeing without using dispersant and the dyed polyester fabric showed good leveling and color fastness properties.
