Donor substituted verdazyls as the basis for molecular switches

The subsitituted verdazyl 1,5-diisopropyl-3-(4'-dimethylaminophenyl)-6-oxoverdazyl crystallizes in purple and green forms (Figure 1) that surprisingly seem to be isostructural. Similarly the anion of 1,5-diisopropyl-3-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-6-oxoverdazyl also shows large changes in the UV-visible spectra depending upon solvent. We report the full characterization of these unusual molecules and our attempts to induce switching between purple and green forms. Possible explanations of their unusual electronic structures will also be presented.
