A new class of highly fluorescent 2,7-diaryl-fluorene derivatives were synthesized and characterized. These new fluorene derivatives are emitting in blue to yellow region (λmax = 378 to 570 nm) having narrow FWHM (~30-70 nm) with high quantum yield (φF = 0.12-0.87 and τF = 0.23-0.97 ns) in dichloromethane. Thin solid films of these compounds show blue emission in the similar range. The HOMO levels of 9,9'-bis-(2-ethylhexyl)fluorene were tuned by 2,7-diaryl substitution while keeping the energy band gap in the range of 2.40-3.42 eV. Hammett correlation with EHOMO of these new compounds provides the effective tool to predict the HOMO level of similar compounds prior to the synthesis. These fluorene derivatives were used in the fabrication of organic light emitting diodes, OLEDs.
