The piperidine ring system is an important moiety in medicinal chemistry and can be found in a variety of compounds with diverse biological activities. In lieu of the importance of the piperidine ring system, new methods for the enantioselective construction of 2-substituted piperidine derivatives have been under investigation. An enantioselective iridium catalyzed cycloamination of 1-(3-pyridyl)-1,5-pentandiol derivatives has been developed for the construction of 2-pyridylpiperidines. The total synthesis of (S)-anabasine (1) and (S)-noranabasamine (2) will be presented.
