Target-oriented total synthesis provides a crucial testing ground for establishing the utility and demonstrating the limitations of synthetic methods. In addition, such initiatives serve as the springboard for discovery of new catalysts and protocols. Recent efforts directed towards natural product syntheses that have served the above important functions will be the focus of this presentation. The development of new chiral N-heterocyclic carbene-based catalysts for a variety of enantioselective C–C bond forming reactions will be emphasized.
