Inspired by the Sharpless dihydroxylation and aminohydroxylation reactions, we have investigated the synthesis of osmium (VIII) alkylidene complexes for analogous carbohydroxylation and carboamination reactions. Herein we present the synthesis of osmium (VIII) alkylidene species (eg 3) by reaction of a dioxobis(imido)osmium complex (eg 1) with a phosphorus ylide (eg 2). We also describe the reactivity of these alkylidene species towards a variety of trapping agents.
