For some time our research group has been investigating the preparation of vinylogous iminium salts, their reactivity, their utility in organic synthesis in general and their application to the synthesis of bioactive heterocyclic compounds in particular. A summary of our earlier studies will be presented along with current and ongoing work, which delineates the application of vinylogous iminium salts to the synthesis of bioactive, pyrrole containing marine natural products.
