A powerful solution-phase sensor array of cationic bis-boronic acid appended benzyl viologens and the anionic fluorescent dye, 8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid trisodium salt, similar to an indicator displacement assay is presented. This system is able to discriminate via diagnostic pattern recognition among neutral and anionic diol-containing bioanalytes including mono- and disaccharides, phospho sugars and nucleotides in aqueous solution at low millimolar concentrations. Several multivariate analysis methods such as principal component analysis, linear discriminant analysis and hierachical cluster analysis were used to evaluate the discrimination.
