We develop microfluidic technology for controlling and understanding the dynamics of biological systems in space and time. In parallel, we develop concepts to simplify biological complexity to intuitive levels to provide hypotheses and guide experiments. We apply this approach to understand the dynamics of biological systems representing three levels of complexity: molecular, network, and organismal levels. In addition to helping us understand complexity, this approach provides microfluidic tools to advance areas that benefit from miniaturization, such as microscale synthetic and analytical chemistry.
