Annulated cycloheptadienes in natural product synthesis

Benzannulated and pyridine-annulated cycloheptadienes have been found to be versatile precursors to a range of diterpenoid natural products as well as a series of alkaloids. The syntheses of the cycloheptadienes and their application to the total syntheses of several natural products will be presented.
