During our studies on assay of vanadium in various natural and agricultural products, a simple and highly sensitive spectrophotometric method has been developed at detection limit of 0.2 ng/mL. The method is based on catalytic oxidation of 1,8-dihydroxy nathalene-3,6-disulfonic acid and phenyl hydrazine with potassium chlorate. Now, the color reagent 1, the essential key for success of the analytical method, has been identified and synthesis. The details of the synthesis and regio-selectivity for the hydrazone formation will be disclosed.
