This paper introduces a chemical model of a β-sheet that dimerizes by parallel β-sheet formation in chloroform solution. In this model system, molecular templates induce β-sheet structure in attached peptide strands. Interaction through parallel β-sheet formation is important in protein aggregation, notably in the formation of β-amyloid which is associated with Alzheimers disease. Well-characterized chemical model systems with which to study β-sheet interactions have not previously been reported; the present system represents the first well-characterized model system with which to study intermolecular parallel β-sheet formation.
