Fluorescent compounds have useful applications as probes in biological research, analytical studies, and sensors. We designed and synthesized perylenemonoimides and diimides that show intense absorption and fluorescent emission of visible light. The effects of aromatic substitution on the electronic and fluorescence properties of these compounds were investigated.
