Progress towards a rigid triarylmethane molecular motor stator

A proposed rotary light-driven molecular motor (1) consists of two parts.   A fluorenyl rotor (2) and a rigid triarylmethane stator (3).  Attempts at the synthesis of 3 and various analogs will be presented.
