The coupling of mechanical forces to molecular processes is, to a certain extent, ubiquitous, but the circumstances under which the influence of mechanical forces should change the way we think about the underlying chemistry are not always obvious. The interplay between mechanics (force) and mechanism (chemistry) will be discussed in regimes that include single molecules, interfaces, and bulk materials.
