Cinchona alkaloids have been identified as privileged chiral organic catalysts. In this lecture the development of powerful cooperative asymmetric catalysis for a wide range of nucleophile electrophile reactions with cinchona alkaloids bifunctional organic catalysts will be presented. Mechanistic studies that shed significant light on the origin of such cooperative asymmetric catalysis will be discussed. The impact of the cinchona alkaloid catalysis on the asymmetric synthesis of biologically important compounds and complex natural products will be illustrated.
