Photochemical processes allow for the formation of products that otherwise would not be as easily synthesized. We report herein a unique photochemically-mediated rearrangement of simple aryl sulfoxide-tethered enone 1 to fused thiolane oxide 2. This methodology displays efficient construction of fused heterocycles as well as quaternary centers. Further manipulations of the photoadducts provide access to highly substituted and diverse heterocyclic structures.
