Functionalized azobenzenes are valuable tools to influence protein activity. Despite 100 years of azobenzene chemistry, however, a general synthetic strategy for their synthesis via cross coupling has not been established. We have developed Suzuki couplings to trifluoroborate azobenzenes to prepare light-switchable kinase inhibitors (Fig 1). The scope and limitations of this reaction was investigated.
