Cations are generated by treatment of propargylic alkoxides with boron trichloride instead of the anticipated boronate complexes. The reactions are important because the cations are generated in the absence of Brønsted acids. One application of the Brønsted acid-free reaction is the efficient allylation of propargylic alcohols.
