Studies toward the total synthesis of (+)-alexine

Polyhydroxylated pyrrolizidine alkaloids are a class of natural products which exhibit interesting biological properties. We have recently developed conditions for a novel [3+2]-cycloaddition reaction as an efficient entry to highly functionalized pyrrolidines. This approach provides a straightforward route to natural products containing highly oxygenated pyrrolidine subunits, which is demonstrated by an expedient synthesis of the pyrrolizidine alkaloid (+)-alexine.
