A bimetallic catalytic system for dihydroxylation of olefins has been immobilized in the ionic liquid [bmim]PF6. The catalysts consisting of Osmium tetroxide, N-methylmorpholine, and a co-catalyst of either VO(acac)2 or MeReO3 serve as an electron transfer mediator (ETM). This immobilized catalytic system is highly efficient for dihydroxylation with hydrogen peroxide as the terminal oxidant. The catalytic system is entrapped in the ionic liquid phase, which can be reused and recycled.
