A new procedure for synthesizing nanocrystalline rutile powder (NRP) is proposed. Highly dispersed NRP having ultrafine and well-proportioned diameters was successfully prepared via improving conventional liquid one-step method by introducing dioctyl sulfosuccinate sodium salt (AOT) in the reaction anaphase according to double electric layers model. Titanium tetrabutoxide was employed as a precursor, which eliminated influence of Cl- and SO42- on product. The average grain size of product is 10-30 nm. The effects of titanium tetrabutoxide (Ti(OBu)4) to ethanol volume ratio, precipitation temperature, peptization temperature and presence of dioctyl sulfosuccinate sodium salt (AOT) on properties of NRP were studied. The optimum conditions for preparation of NRP were obtained. The TEM, XRD, SEM and FT-IR results were also investigated. The improved liquid one-step method not only has many excellent characters, such as simple process, low reaction temperature, non-strict requirement to the technology and equipment, a little energy consumption, but also resolves the problem of dispersivity of nano particles readily.
