The complex structures of natural products provide inspiration for the development of new methods in synthetic organic chemistry. Our research group is engaged in the total synthesis of peptides and alkaloids for the primary purpose of discovering new reactions and devising novel synthetic strategies. In many cases, we design simplified model systems in which to test our proposed chemistry prior to undertaking the total synthesis. Results from our ongoing syntheses of the peptide celogentin C and the alkaloids acutumine and lyconadin A will be presented. An overview of the synthetic methods developed in the context of these efforts will also be given.
