Water soluble calixarenes are interesting targets due to the versatility of their hydrophobic cavities for studying molecular recognition in aqueous media. Water soluble groups such as sulfonates, carboxylic acids, amines and phosphonates can be utilized with the phosphonates being the least studied, in particular upper rim phosphonated calixarenes. We have prepared a wide range of phosphonated calixarenes and a description of their host-guest chemistry will be presented.
