In the modern context it is important to conduct reactions under environmentally benign conditions. In this regard we are currently exploring photochemical reactions in water soluble confined nanocapsules. Nanocapsule whose dimension is 20x10 Å (Scheme 1) is soluble in borate buffer solution, not only encapsulates a variety of aromatic molecules of photochemical interest in aqueous solution but also offers remarkable selectivity on reactants during photochemical reactions. In this presentation, results of our efforts to control the excited chemistry and physics of organic molecules in singlet oxygen mediated oxidation of olefins and isomerization of stilbenes will be highlighted. A detailed study on encapsulation, characterization of host-guest complexes, appealing results obtained upon photoirradiation will be discussed.
