Cobalt-catalyzed oligoalkyne cyclizations are the key step in the synthesis of the phenylenes, a novel class of cyclohexatrienoid hydrocarbons, in which the aromatic benzene nucleus is fused to the antiaromatic cyclobutadiene frame in an alternating manner. This lecture will describe new rearrangements that occur in some linear, angular, and helical members of the series.
