The naturally occurring iridiod monoterpene nepetalactone found in catmint oil has been demonstrated to be an insect repellent. Given that nepetalactone has an enol lactone functionality capable of further derivatization, it is possible to prepare other nepetalactone derivatives as potential new insect repellents.
