A range of lectins and enzymes recognize carbohydrate substrates to mediate host-host and host-pathogen interactions. The use of a fluorous-tag-assisted strategy facilitates the determination of the substrate range of carbohydrate-binding proteins as well as carbohydrate-active enzymes. This fluorous tag-assisted solution phase method allows the rapid, and potentially automated, modular synthesis of carbohydrates and their direct use in forming microarrays to probe carbohydrate-protein recognition.
