A ring closing metathesis reaction to form the pyrone ring, and an asymmetric Heck coupling to generate the C5'-C6' containing moiety have been developed. Each of these processes required a significant amount of development and optimization. For example, the effects of ethylene removal in the former and silver ion presence in the latter have been explored. Insights gained from these studies will be presented.
