| Chains of covalently linked redox groups may be used as redox relays for shuttling “electrical charge” (i.e. electrons) along the relay. The nature of the electronic coupling between redox groups plays an important role in the relay function. Previous work of our group has shown that cross-conjugation of different redox units provides effective overlap of the units while preserving their weak electronic coupling necessary for the groups to remain distinct. In this study, we explore the possibility of using direct conjugation of the redox units as a means linking discrete groups along a relay and address the question of their degree of electronic coupling through a diphenylacetylene connector.
