The preparation of esters has been well studied and a variety of methods are known. In order to prepare a variety of substituted allylic esters, we have explored various green approaches to ester formation. Using solid acid catalysts, and dehydrating agents, we have prepared several esters using various combinations of carboxylic acids and their salts with alcohols, alkoxides, and halides. In addition, we are working to adapt this method to make an undergraduate laboratory exercise in green chemistry.
