Modular synthesis of polyketides: Towards the synthesis of the C9-27 degradation product of Aflastatin A

A modular approach for the synthesis of complex polyketide natural products and its application to the synthesis of the C9-27 degradation product of Aflastatin A (4) will be described. This new synthetic strategy is based on the efficient coupling of functionalized nucleophilic alkyne modules with electrophilic epoxyalkyne modules, followed by functionalization of the internal alkynes to provide the desired 1,3,5… alternating polyols.
