The diversity of chemistry that we, as early development process chemists, are exposed to represents a unique area at the interface between discovery and late stage development. Each potential new chemical entity brings new challenges in the quest for a synthesis that can generate the first kilos of drug substance. Balancing the need for speed to market with robustness and reproducibility is one of the important inputs for decisions. Most of our projects have at least one key step that can make or break the proposed route. In this presentation I would like to share some of the key steps that we developed in a variety of projects that were turning points for the scale up route.
