Fluorescent boronic acids that are water soluble and change fluorescent properties are very useful for the design and synthesis of lectin mimics (boronolectins) for biological applications under physiological conditions. Along this line, we have designed and synthesized a number of benzo[b]thiophene boronic acids. Some of these compounds showed dual fluorescence changes upon binding with various sugars at physiological pH in aqueous solution. In contrast to other known monoboronic acids, one of these boronic acids demonstrated unusual binding trends with sugars. The presentation will discuss the synthesis and fluorescent evaluation of several benzo[b]thiophene boronic acid analogs.
