This project examines a short, efficient synthesis of cyclobutenedione. Squaric acid is converted to 3,4-dichlorocyclobutenedione in refluxing thionyl chloride. The hydrodehalogenation of 3,4-dichlorocyclobutenedione to yield cyclobutenedione using a variety of catalysts and hydrogen is investigated. The effect of varying reaction conditions on the yield and product distribution of this reaction will be discussed.
