The title compound 1 was synthesized through a highly efficient sequence. The 2,3,6- positions of complex 1 can be functionalized in a short sequence stereoselectively in high yields. Use of different 2,3,6-substituents makes 1 a versatile scaffold for the synthesis of a variety of piperidine based alkaloids especially indolizidines and quinolizidines. The synthesis and resolution of 1 and approaches towards the synthesis of alkaloid natural products will be discussed.
