During the last 30 years the development of palladium catalyzed coupling reactions has transformed the way bonds are created. However, most protocols involve insitu formation of the catalyst; active palladium (0) complexes that can be isolated are unstable and normally decompose with time. Therefore, the development of a user-friendly catalyst or pre-catalyst that could be utilized in a variety of palladium catalyzed procedures, for example; C-C coupling (ranging from aryl-aryl to alkyl-alkyl), Buchwald-Hartwig and Heck reactions would be a significant step forward. We report here, air and moisture stable Pd-NHC complexes 1, 2 and 3 that employ a throw away ligand approach, can be used in various palladium catalyzed processes. These pre-catalysts significantly enhance the appeal of palladium catalyzed chemistry by requiring no special handling both in their synthesis or use.
