The electrophilic cyclization of functionally-sustituted alkynes provides a variety of useful heterocycles, including benzothiophenes, indoles, isoquinolines, isocoumarins, etc. The success of the reaction prompted us to establish the relative reactivity of various functional groups towards cyclization. This has been accomplished by studying competitive cyclizations using halogen and selenium electrophiles.
