The normal electron-rich behavior of the indole double bond is reversed by the incorporation of electron-withdrawing groups at the indole C2 and C3 positions. Novel chemistry of 2- and 3-nitroindoles emphasizing 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions will be presented. This chemistry gives access to novel fused heterocycles which would be difficult to synthesize otherwise. Along these lines, progress in the synthesis of Iheyamines will be presented.
