Various derivatives of orotic acid were synthesized. Orotic acid, a derivative of uracil / thymine, is a degradation product of RNA / DNA and is a suspected carcinogen. The orotic acid derivatives are being synthesized to simulate the photodimerization of thymine, believed to be the primary mode of photochemical damage implicated in sunlight induced cancer. The synthesis of the derivatives and the photodimerization of some of the derivatives will be discussed
