Metallophthalocyanine dimers were obtained by complementary self-coordination of imidazolyl to Zn(II) or Mg(II) in N-methylimidazolyl-appended phthalocyaninatozinc(II) or magnesium(II). The association constants of the dimers were estimated as over 1011 M-1 in toluene by dissociative titration with imidazole. The UV-vis spectrum showed characteristically split Q bands due to the exciton coupling of the slipped cofacial structure in a close distance to give rise to red- and blue shifts of head-to-tail and face-to-face transitions, respectively. The dimer maintained the fluorescence intensity of the high fluorescence of the monomeric phthalocyanines. The structure was confirmed by specific shift of imidazolyl peaks by the ring current.
