We use the orthogonal miscibility of fluorous phases to drive the formation of discrete peptide and protein assemblies in aqueous solution and in membrane environments. Furthermore, we will discuss the introduction of a new fluorous reagent that is useful in tagging deletion products during solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) using manual and automated methods. In addition, incorporation of fluorinated compounds on the surface of mammalian cells will be briefly discussed. Together, these studies present powerful methodology to engineer orthogonal noncovalent behavior in biological solvents.
