The capability of phenyl sulfoxide (1) and methyl phenyl sulfoxide (2) to photoinduce strand cleavage in plasmid DNA has been investigated. The results of plasmid relaxations assays will be discussed. Mechanistic experiments to determine the species responsible for DNA cleavage will also be presented.
