Fluorous benzoaldehydes prepared from perfluorooctanesulfonyl fluoride and hydroxybenzoaldehydes have been employed in the synthesis of diversified library scaffolds. The fluorous tag has three functions: as a phenol protecting group, as a phase tag for fluorous solid-phase extraction of reaction intermediates, and as a hydroxy activating group for Suzuki and other cross-coupling reactions to form aryl C-C, C-N, C-S, and C-H bonds. No additional step is needed for fluorous tag cleavage.
