Pyridine and bipyridine metal complexes are of great interest due to their unique photochemical and photoelectric properties. For example, Ru(bpy)3 complexes have been utilized in photovoltaic cells for the conversion of solar energy to electricity. We have developed an efficient method for preparing iodo-substituted pyridines and bipyridines. These iodo-substituted pyridines and bipyridines have facilitated the preparation of highly conjugated pyridine and bipyridine derivatives utilizing Palladium- catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. Preparation and characterization of a series of highly conjugated pyridine and bipyridine derivatives will be described. The spectroscopic behavior of free ligands and their metal complexes will be discussed.
