Progress toward the preparation of a series of nitrogen-substituted hexabenzocoronene derivatives is described. Highly conjugated organic materials have attracted much interest due to their potential as functional materials. We are particularly interested in the preparation of nitrogen-substituted hexabenzocoronene derivatives. These hexabenzocoronene derivatives can be prepared from simple tolanes via catalytic cyclotrimerization followed by cyclodehydrogenation of suitable hexaphenylbenzenes. Toward this end, we will describe the preparation and characterization of a variety of symmetrical and asymmetrical tolanes with nitrogen-containing functional groups and the consequent approach to the preparation of nitrogen-substituted hexabenzocoronene derivatives.
