Crown ethers have been used in the preparation of supramolecules such as rotaxanes and catenanes. We are interested in the preparation of polyhalogenated dibenzocrown ethers and their conjugated derivatives, which can selectively complex with various metal ions and guest molecules. We will present the preparation and characterization of a series of highly conjugated dibenzocrown ether derivatives starting from simple catechols. We will also discuss the complexation behavior of the crown ethers.
